The Diving Safety Program

The purposes of a diving safety program are to insure that all diving under the auspices of the university of California is conducted in a manner most likely to minimize accidental injury or occupational illness, and to set forth rules, regulations and standards for training and certification which allow a working reciprocity between campuses engaged in scientific diving. Basic certification is required for enrollment into the Research Divers Training class.

Training and certification

Any person diving under University auspices is required to observe the provisions of the university Diving Manual. Diving is not permitted by individuals until they have met the requirements for diving pertinent to the level of the proposed activity.

Pre-Training Requirements

Priority: Participants for the course will be determined by your current status at UCSB (priority may be given to UCSB faculty, staff, and graduate students and then to undergraduates (undergrads currently working in a UCSB lab with a recommendation from a current UCSB Scientific Diver or lab will have priority over other undergrads).

Cost: When requested, you should submit a check to reserve your space in the class

Checks should be for $225, made out to the “UC Regents", and sent to the Environmental Health and Safety Office, UCSB, Diving Safety Office, Santa Barbara, CA 93106 MAP

Additional costs include the medical examination and possible optional hyperbaric chamber dive, gear rental and boat trip.

Medical Examination: Medical examinations must be totally completed prior to the first day of class and a “Doctor’s Approval Form” must be on file at the Environmental Health and Safety Office. Anyone not having the medical exam completed will not be allowed to participate in the class. Students may take the medical examination at Student Health Services, the exam may take about 2 weeks to complete. Faculty and staff must go to an outside physician, the forms for this are available online and should be presented to the physician and returned to Environmental Health and Safety.
