General Laboratory Safety, 3 hrs, quarterly (x-4899)
Review of the hazards and safe work practices relevant to chemicals,
compressed gases, electricity, cryogenics, vacuum/pressurized systems,
waste disposal, personal protective equipment, emergency response and
campus safety resources. Fire Extinguisher Usage class (below) is generally
included here.
Fire Extinguisher Usage, 1 hr, quarterly (x-7751)
Hands-on use and review of the various types of campus extinguishers
to put out small controlled fires. Review of basic fire prevention and
response techniques.
Hazardous Waste Refresher, 15 min. online training (x-3293)
This course is intended for all hazardous waste generators on campus
and is to be used to refresh the attendee’s knowledge of regulations
and campus policies concerning hazardous waste. All laboratory personnel
must have already completed EH&S' Laboratory Safety Course which
includes the initial hazardous waste training, among many other topics.
Radiation Safety, 3 hrs, every six weeks; 1 hour refresher class
is quarterly (x-7256)
Mandatory class for isotope users; types of ionizing radiation; decay
tables; biological effects of ionizing radiation; acute and chronic
exposure; occupational exposure limits; radiation monitoring; properties
and handling of common isotopes; contamination control measures; waste
disposal; instrumentation; surveys; recordkeeping requirements.
Laboratory Supervisors – Responsibilities and Resources, 15
min. online training (x-4899)
Lab supervisors have direct responsibilities under campus policy and
the law to provide a safe work environment for their employees. This
online module provides supervisors with: a. an overview of their general
safety responsibilities, b. some specific safety documentation tasks
to complete to be in compliance with Cal-OSHA regulations, c. available
safety resources.
Bloodborne Pathogens, upon request (x-8894)
For employees at “reasonable risk” of exposure to blood
and other potentially infectious materials. Bloodborne diseases and
their transmission; recognition of tasks potentially resulting in occupational
exposure; Hepatitis B vaccination; Universal Precautions; personal protective
equipment; emergency and disinfection procedures; UCSB BP program.

Training Resources Outside of EH&S:
CPR and First Aid are no longer offered through EH&S,
but are offered through the campus Recreation Department.
Ergonomics for Computer Workstations and Repetitive Motion Injuries
in Labs (e.g. pipetting)
These safety issues are handled through
Business Services (x4169). Typical ergonomics issues include: the musculoskeletal
system and cumulative trauma disorders (tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome,
back problems); ergonomic risk factors; guidelines for proper biomechanics;
computer workstation guidelines; office exercises.
