Definition

The Fire Prevention Division works with the UCSB Community and Administration by enforcing state fire prevention codes. These fire and life safety standards include assisting with identifying and eliminating workplace fire hazards, and approval of building and renovation projects to ensure compliance with state fire and life safety codes.

Mission

To enable the campus community to maintain and promote instructional and research goals while providing technical expertise and safe practice standards as defined by state codes and the CA State Fire Marshal.

Implementation

The Fire Prevention Division is available by appointment to provide technical consultation regarding specific fire and life safety concerns. Annual inspections are conducted of areas, which historically require monitoring, and deficiencies are examined and reviewed in order to create solutions, which meet state safety requirements and satisfy the needs of the campus.

Fire & Life Safety Training

Assists campus departments in meeting legal requirements and providing general awareness regarding health and safety practices and occupational hazards by offering life safety classes which include live hands-on fire extinguishment and proper extinguisher use. Provides annual specialized training for campus student employees charged with operating campus facilities.

UCSB Fire Extinguisher Training (Online)

This training is on the UCSB Learning Center and requires your UCSBNetID and password. The UCSB Fire Extinguisher Training is a “refresher training” for those who have already taken the “initial hands-on” training. This online training doesn't take the place of the "initial hands-on" training. For the "initial" training, please call (805) 893-5848.

Campus Event Management

Definition

For campus assembly (gathering together of more than 50 persons) events such as athletic events, concerts, commencement ceremonies, theatrical performances, the Fire Prevention Division is responsible for occupant safety by ensuring set-up complies and event operates within state assembly requirements.

Mission

To ensure the safety of event patrons during campus events.

Implementation

Fire Division staff sets occupant loads, issues permits, approves event set-up, maintains exiting and aisles, assures accessible fire protection equipment, attends and monitors large events and provides general safety consultation as required by state codes and campus policies. Develops emergency procedures - staff assignments, floor plan location of fire equipment, emergency evacuation assembly point, etc.
