Release & License to Use Image
California Civil Code, Section 3344 governs the use of “another’s name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness in any manner, on or in products, merchandise, or goods, or for purposes of advertising or selling, or soliciting purchases of, products, merchandise, goods or services...” Consent of the individual is required prior to using/publishing his/her identifiable image in this manner or for these purposes. It is the practice at UCSB to obtain the consent of an individual whose identifiable image will be featured in any media prior to its publication.
Use the Release & License to Use Image, Name and/or Voice to obtain permission from individuals to use their image or visual likeness, their name, and/or their voice in University publications or other productions. If this Release is being granted with respect to a minor, it is necessary to obtain the prior consent of the minor’s parents or legal guardian.
Release & License to Use Image (Spanish)
Use the Release & License to Use Image, Name and/or Voice (Spanish) to obtain permission from Spanish-speaking individuals to use their image or visual likeness, their name, and/or their voice in University publications or other productions. If this Release is being granted with respect to a minor, it is necessary to obtain the prior consent of the minor’s parents or legal guardian.
Release & License to Use Image - Group Sign-up Sheet
Use the Release & License to Use Image, Name and/or Voice, Group Sign-up Sheet to obtain permission from groups of people when it is more practical than collecting individual Releases from individuals. The Group Sign-Up Sheet should only be signed after the individuals signing it have read the associated Release & License to Use Image, Name and/or Voice.
Release & License to Use Intellectual Property
Copyright laws govern the use of another’s creative work. It is necessary to obtain the consent of an individual whose creative work will be featured in any media prior to its publication if the publication or use of the work does not conform to fair use definitions. Use the Release & License to Use Intellectual Property to obtain permission from individuals to use their intellectual property, e.g. photographs, film, artwork, music, etc., in University publications and other productions.
